Di Camillo Bakery Loses Last of Its Second-Generation Owners

Joseph J. Di Camillo, the last of the Second-Generation owners of Di Camillo Bakery, died on February 22: he was 99 years old.

Joseph J. Di Camillo, the last of the Second-Generation owners of Di Camillo
Bakery, died on February 22: he was 99 years old. He remained close to his surviving
sisters Angelica Di Camillo and Theresa Hargrave Di Camillo, who—now both in the
90s -- still work at Di Camillo Bakery part-time.

Joe at Home (Circa 1934)

Born in Niagara Falls to Tomaso and Addoloratta Di Camillo, Joseph was the
seventh of twelve children, and the youngest of five brothers who comprised the
nucleus of the Di Camillo Bakery.

Joe & Tom Di Camillo (Circa 1938)

Joseph was an avid and accomplished crooner, during the golden age of American Song. After a stint as a singer for big bands in New York City, Joseph returned to Niagara Falls to work with his brothers Thomas, Frank, and Nick, in transitioning DiCamillo bakery from a one-site grocery/bakery to four locations in various Niagara Falls neighborhoods. All the while he pursued his amateur singing career in the Niagara Frontier.

Joseph was affectionately known as “Goo-Goo” by his family and neighborhood
friends. He was a man of great style, wit, and charm, a lover of life, women and song.
He is survived by his sons Gary (Susan) and Mark (Leslie) and his wife Barbara
Ferguson Federlein Di Camillo.

Though Joseph officially retired from Di Camillo Bakery, he went on to become a
successful stock broker and life-insurance salesman as well.

Joseph’s business acumen, keen sense of style, and knowledge of commerce
assisted in the segue of Di Camillo Bakery from a Western New York institution to a
nationally-known entity.

Uncle Joe, thank you for all you brought to our bakery and our family!

I found your site after receiving a bid opportunity. I quickly began looking at your generations products but quickly became distracted by your well written blog and family generation history with each member adding to the whole. Im a 5th generation printer, our families McKay Printing, was for 85 years Seattles oldest family owned print/letterpress. It was a lovely break in my day.
Your site is a high end and matches the quality of your packaging and productss beautifully.
