Our confetti candies are among the very finest productions of pan-candy in the world. Do not confuse our confetti with the hard, pasty, heavily sugar-coated candies so readily available. Our imported, textured, thinly sugar-coated almonds are a sublime confection.
“Pan candy”, “Jordan almonds”, “dragee”, “comfitis” or “confetti” refers to nuts, chocolate or gelatin fruit centers that have a hard candy shell. Our “confetti”, the Italian name for this candy, comes from the beautiful, walled city of Sulmona in the heart of the Abruzzo region. The birth of this confection can be traced to ancient Rome where honeyed almonds were the ancient precursor of our modern sugar-coated candies. Confetti have graced all the great celebrations in Italian life with good taste and symbolic meaning. White confetti are traditionally given at weddings in groups of five symbolizing representing the indivisible and symbolizing the five good wishes for newly-weds: health, prosperity, happiness, fertility, and longevity. In all other situations they are always served in odd numbers (as even numbers are seen as “unlucky”).
