The St. Joseph Table
March 19 is the Feast of San Guseppe. Among members of the Catholic Church, St Joseph is known for his humility, kindness and generosity and is the patron saint of carpenters, pastry chefs and Sicily. The tradition of The St Joseph table of food has its origins in Sicily during the Middle Ages. These elaborate tables of food are arranged like altars and are always meatless. Sicilian legend attributes the end of a devastating drought to a prayer devotion that Sicilian people made to him. This table of food with all of its customs and symbolism of sharing with the poor, is to honor and renew their devotion to him.
This wonderful tradition has actually grown in popularity and celebrations can be found wherever there are people who trace their lineage to Sicily.
