generosity.
He is the patron saint of carpenters, pastry chefs and Sicily.
The tradition of the St . Joseph table of food "la tavala di San Giuseppe"
has its origins in Sicily during the Middle Ages. These elaborate tables of
food are arranged like altars and are always meatless. Sicilian legend
attributes the end of a devastating drought to a prayer-devotion that the
Sicilian people made to St. Joseph. This celebration is a symbolic "thank
you" and renewal of the Sicilian people's devotion to him. It is a shared
celebration with the entire community and riches are given as alms to the
poor: Traditional etiquette is that no one be turned away from a St.
Joseph's Day table. Rich in symbolism this wonderful tradition,
transcending both faith and nationality, has grown in popularity with
celebrations found wherever there are people who trace their lineage to
Sicily.
